The book is light bep;e episodic. Severgnini writes with an affectionate and observant air of the various American quirks. He doesn’t really seemed to have explored anything outside the bubble of the upper-middle class city dwellers he was ensconced in while he was here, and there is so much more to our culture than that.

And I smiled when I got to the part in which Severgnini took friends to a 4th of July celebration in Washington DC—complete with a well-planned meal, a wicker basket, and summer white linen outfits—and wondered by they were getting stared at.

What I found annoying were the obscure, rarely used English words ie perfidious ferrago. Towards the end, he does try for a few pages to seriously assess what Americans are like, he comes up with five English words: I guess that’s only two shallow reasons. It is a very funny book.
For that reason, I would probably not recommend this book to anyone. I developed the habit of walking in France and I keep walking in the States, even in my suburb, developing an eye for varied landscaping and different patterns of light and shade, in the absence of intriguing building details and creative graffiti. Their intent is not to help you navigate through the streets or find a restaurant. Also, Severgnini gets lazy toward the end and then I don’t think the final point he makes in the epilogue has much to do with the rest of the work. It is not essentially a travel book. In this instance, who really got there first? After they are gone, the street is covered with plastic bottles and cans, and looks as if a bomb has hit it.
