An interesting passage about the influence of mythraeism on early Christianity. With so much of the book focused on the people and places of Rome, I would have seggreti some illustrations of the buildings, art, and portraits of the people that were at the center of these stories to bring them to life just that little bit extra.

Any visit to Rome cannot but benefit from this book. Bellissimo, interessante e ben scritto. La mole di informazioni rischia in ogni caso di sommergere il lettore sprovveduto deciso ad incamerare tutte le informazioni. Continuo a pensare che certi edifici siano belli in se, indipendentemente dalla storia passata o no fra le pareti e nei cortili. Instead it felt like Augias included personal recollections within the context of the historical bits that didn’t always seem to make logical sense of why they were included.

Augias ci porta a spasso per Roma in varie epoche storiche e riesce facilmente a conciliare storia dell’arte, politica, storia sociale, architettura, antropologia Ancient history and 20th century history rest by one another on the streets of Rome, and Augias incorporates events from both and the centuries in between.

In ogni caso un libro che vale la pena di leggere. I fatti, le gesta prevalentemente scelte hanno ovviamente una seria preponderanza nell’ambito delle quattro “S” Soldi Sangue Sesso e Sapere, i soliti mattoni della Storia.

Per ragioni personali ho impiegato quasi un mese a finire questo libro. Libro molto interessante che spazia dalla storia all’arte. Maybe that’s because these overlap with Augias’ own lifetime and are therefore described more vividly, maybe because I didn’t have as much prior knowledge about Italy under fascism or during and after WWII.

Roma ha tante facce quanti sono i suoi secoli di vita. Une Rome plus intime en quelque sorte. You can tell he loves Rome, but he always had to get back to a story that he was telling, and it interrupted the narrative arc by jum I felt like every chapter had some insights about the history of the city of Rome, the people that have lived there over the years, and the scandals that have shaped it’s story. Along the way he discusses Caesar, Nero, Michelangelo, and several corrupt Popes.

If you are planning a few days there you really should use this book to review years of history on the very spots. Augias si interessa di numerosissimi argomenti, e ce li racconta con una scrittura limpida e coinvolgente, a tratti atmosferica.
